Nachi Fire Festival (Nachi no Hi Matsuri - 50 kg Flaming Torches at Sacred Nachi Falls)
Schedule: 14 Juli Setiap Tahun (Ritual Utama Obor Api di Tangga Batu Nachi: 14:00 JST) | Location: Wakayama (和歌山県)
Celebrated every July 14 deep within the primeval mountain mist of Kumano, the *Nachi Fire Festival* (officially *Nachi Ogi Matsuri*) is revered as one of Japan’s Three Great Fire Festivals and a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Originating more than 1,700 years ago from primordial nature veneration of the soaring 133-meter Nachi Falls as an embodied Shinto deity, this primeval rite orchestrates the annual return of the twelve guardian deities of Kumano to their ancestral waterfall shrine. The climax unfolds as twelve towering six-meter-tall portable shrines (*Ogi Mikoshi*) shaped like vermilion folding-fan towers and ornamented with golden mirrors and pheasant tail feathers are carried down the ancient moss-covered stone stairs. Advancing uphill to meet them are white-clad bearers shouldering twelve colossal blazing pine torches (*Otaimatsu*), each weighing over 50 kilograms. Emitting massive plumes of smoke and scorching heat, the torchbearers swing the fiery pillars to purify the sacred path. At the foot of roaring Nachi Falls inside the Hiro-jinja sanctuary, the encounter reaches an ecstatic frenzy. Torchbearers shout ancient incantations as blazing fires circle the fan shrines amid the thunderous roar of plunging water and sweet pine-resin embers. This primordial convergence of roaring fire and sacred water delivers an unforgettable, soul-stirring spiritual epiphany within Kumano’s UNESCO World Heritage mountains.
