Tokyo Cherry Blossom (Sakura Hanami) Festival: Meguro River & Chidorigafuchi
Schedule: Akhir Maret - Awal April 2026 (Puncak Mekar Mankai) | Location: Tokyo (東京都)
Every year from late March through early April, the sprawling metropolis of Tokyo undergoes an ethereal transformation into a sea of soft pastel pink as thousands of Somei Yoshino cherry trees burst into full bloom (Mankai). The cultural tradition of gathering beneath blossoming boughs (Hanami) has been practiced in Japan since the 8th century, drawing families, friends, and coworkers to spread out blue tarps for convivial outdoor feasts celebrating the fleeting, transient beauty of life. The most enchanting Hanami spectacles unfold across three world-famous vantage points: first, along the Imperial Palace’s historic Chidorigafuchi Moat, where visitors row wooden dinghies beneath weeping cherry branches draped over the emerald water; second, within grand Ueno Onshi Park, where over 800 cherry trees form a continuous canopy beneath glowing paper festival lanterns; and third, along the picturesque 4-kilometer tree-lined canal of the Meguro River in Nakameguro. At nightfall, the celebration transforms into "Yozakura" (nocturnal cherry blossom viewing), where thousands of soft pink paper lanterns (Bonbori) illuminate the Meguro River promenade. Petals drifting into the water gradually blanket the entire canal surface in a floating pink floral tapestry known as "Hana-ikada" (flower raft). Public access to all riverbanks and park promenades is completely free, reachable via central JR Yamanote and Tokyo Metro subway stations.
