Kanda Matsuri 2026 (Grand Biennial Shinto Samurai Procession in Central Tokyo)
Schedule: 08 - 14 Mei 2026 (Minggu Pertengahan Mei, Tahun Utama Hon-matsuri) | Location: Tokyo (東京都)
Ranked alongside Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri as one of "Japan’s Three Great Festivals," and historically revered as the "Tenka Matsuri" (Festival of the Shogun), Kanda Matsuri is a monumental Shinto celebration hosted by Kanda Myojin Shrine. Originating from Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu’s prayer for victory at the decisive Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, this grand spectacle is staged in its full monumental format (Hon-matsuri) exclusively in even-numbered calendar years, including May 2026. The Saturday climax features the magnificent "Shinkosai" grand procession—a day-long, 30-kilometer march snaking through Tokyo’s modern financial capitals of Otemachi, Marunouchi, historic Nihombashi, and vibrant Akihabara. Over 1,000 marchers garbed in Heian aristocratic silk robes and Edo samurai armor escort the sacred Phoenix Palanquins (Houren), accompanied by mounted samurai cavalry, court musicians playing ancient Gagaku pipes, and giant mythical effigies of horned Oni demons and golden catfish. On Sunday, the matsuri explodes into sheer civic joy during "Mikoshi Miyairi," where roughly 200 portable shrines representing 108 neighborhood guilds surge directly through the neon-drenched avenues of Akihabara Electric Town towards Kanda Myojin Shrine. The mind-boggling juxtaposition of ancient samurai pageantry set against futuristic anime skyscrapers provides an unforgettable cultural snapshot. Viewing is completely free along the procession corridors.
