Akita Kanto Matsuri 46-Lantern Pole Balancing (UNESCO) & Yokote Kamakura Snow Hut Festival

Schedule: 3 - 6 Agustus (Akita Kanto Matsuri) & 15 - 16 Februari (Yokote Kamakura) | Location: Tohoku (東北)

Celebrated alongside Aomori Nebuta and Sendai Tanabata as one of the Three Great Festivals of Tohoku and inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, the **Akita Kanto Matsuri** held every August 3–6 transforms downtown Akita City into a glowing golden harvest field. Each giant *Kanto* consists of a 12-meter bamboo pole weighing up to **50 kilograms**, rigged with nine horizontal crossbars bearing 46 candle-lit paper lanterns—shaped like a heavy, drooping stalk of golden rice to banish summer lethargy (*neburi-nagashi*) and pray for an abundant autumn crop. At the blow of a whistle after dusk along Kanto Odori Boulevard, some 280 *Kanto* poles are hoisted simultaneously into the night sky, illuminating the avenue with over 10,000 flickering lanterns. To the thunderous beat of *taiko* drums and rhythmic chants of *"Dokkoisho, dokkoisho!"*, master performers (*Sashi-te*) perform breathtaking feats of balance—transferring the 50-kilogram towering rig hands-free from the flat of one palm onto their forehead, shoulder, and lower hip, while adding extension bamboo joints until the pole arches precariously overhead. In the heart of winter on February 15–16, inland Yokote City celebrates its 450-year-old **Yokote Kamakura Snow Festival** dedicated to the Water Deity (*Suijin-sama*). Over 80 igloo-like snow domes measuring 3 meters high are sculpted across the city; inside each glowing snow hut beneath a snow-carved altar, local children welcome chilly passersby in warm Akita dialect to step inside and share toasted rice cakes (*mochi*) and hot sweet *amazake*, while thousands of candle-lit *mini-kamakura* line the frozen banks of the Yokote River.
