Nikko Toshogu Grand Autumn Festival (Sennin Gyoretsu Procession of 1,000 Samurai)
Schedule: 16 - 17 Oktober 2026 (Pawai Akbar 1.000 Samurai pada 17 Oktober Pagi) | Location: Tochigi (栃木県)
Recreating the solemn 1617 state funeral cortege that transferred the enshrined spirit of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu from Mount Kuno in Shizuoka to his eternal resting mausoleum at Nikko Toshogu Shrine, the Grand Autumn Festival (Shuki Taisai) is one of the most magnificent living samurai pageants in Japan. Set against the fiery red and gold autumn foliage (Koyo) draping Mount Nikko, this centuries-old spectacle forms an integral part of the region’s UNESCO World Heritage prestige. The undisputed crown of the festival is the "Hyakumono-zoroi Sennin Musha Gyoretsu" (Procession of 1,000 Armored Warriors). Over 1,000 local townsmen march in authentic period samurai battle gear: horned Kabuto helmets, iron breastplates, bristling spears (Yari), matchlock muskets (Hinawaju), and twin katana swords. In the center, three gilded Phoenix Palanquins housing the spirits of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Minamoto no Yoritomo are reverently escorted through towering 400-year-old cryptomeria cedar groves. The day prior (October 16), the shrine stages the thrilling "Yabusame" horseback archery ritual along the grand gravel Omotesando avenue, featuring warriors shooting wooden targets at full gallop. Accompanied by ancient Gagaku court melodies and the scent of smoldering cedar, the pageant offers an immersive leap into the apex of the samurai era. Spectator access along Omotesando avenue is free, accessible via a 10-minute bus ride from Tobu-Nikko Station.
