Kawagoe Festival (UNESCO World Heritage Float Festival & Hikkawase Music Battles)
Schedule: Sabtu & Minggu Ketiga Bulan Oktober 2026 (Puncak Malam Hari Minggu) | Location: Saitama (埼玉県)
Inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016 and tracing its genesis over 370 years to 1648 when Kawagoe Castle lord Matsudaira Nobutsuna donated sacred regalia to Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, the "Kawagoe Matsuri" is Saitama Prefecture’s crowning autumnal festival. It holds legendary status as the only festival in modern Japan faithfully preserving the grand style of the lost Edo-period "Tenka Matsuri" (Festivals of the Shogun). The breathtaking stars are nearly 30 towering, multi-tiered wooden floats (Dashi) soaring over 8 meters high, adorned with gilded dragons, historic European tapestries, and colossal effigies of legendary figures like Tokugawa Ieyasu and deity Susanoo. Built with an ingenious 360-degree rotating turntable platform, each float hosts a troupe of traditional Ohayashi percussionists accompanied by energetic masked dancers portraying mythical white foxes (Kitsune) and comedic tricksters (Hyottoko). The nocturnal climax is the electrifying "Hikkawase" musical duel taking place at cramped intersections across the black clay-walled Kurazukuri warehouse district. When two rival 8-meter floats cross paths, their rotating stages swivel to face each other mere inches apart. Flute and taiko musicians duel at lightning tempos, trying to throw off the opponent’s rhythm, while hundreds of youth frantically hoist glowing paper lanterns into the night air accompanied by thunderous cheers. Easily accessible 30 minutes from Tokyo’s Ikebukuro Station.
