Chichibu Night Festival (UNESCO World Heritage Float Festival & Winter Fireworks)
Schedule: 02 - 03 Desember 2026 (Puncak Malam Festival 3 Desember) | Location: Saitama (埼玉県)
Inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016 and ranked alongside Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and Gifu’s Takayama Matsuri as one of "Japan’s Three Great Float Festivals" (Nihon Sandai Hikiyama Matsuri), the Chichibu Night Festival boasts over three centuries of history in the mountains of western Saitama. The matsuri marks the sacred annual winter rendezvous between the female deity of Mount Buko (Myoken Bosatsu) and the dragon water god of the Arakawa River. The stars of the festival are six colossal, ornately carved multi-ton wooden floats (four palace-style Yatai and two tiered parasol Kasaboko) weighing between 10 and 20 tons each. Adorned with gold-leaf woodcarvings, imported Gobelin tapestries, and glowing paper lanterns, these mobile castles double as theatrical stages for traditional outdoor Kabuki plays enacted by local children and actors. The festival reaches its breathtaking fever pitch on the freezing night of December 3. Thousands of energetic local bearers pull the colossal 20-ton floats up the steep, icy incline of "Dango-zaka" slope purely by muscle power, egged on by wild taiko rhythms and deafening cheers. Simultaneously overhead, one of Japan’s rare winter fireworks displays illuminates the crisp mountain sky with massive aerial chrysanthemum shells for over two hours. Reachable via the direct Seibu Limited Express Laview from Tokyo’s Ikebukuro to Seibu-Chichibu in 77 minutes.
