Located in Omiya, Saitama Prefecture—a historic transportation hub celebrated since the Meiji era as Japan's premier 'Railway Town'—The Railway Museum (affectionately nicknamed 'Teppaku') is globally renowned as one of the largest, most sophisticated railway museums ever created. Inaugurated on Railway Day (October 14, 2007) by the East Japan Railway Culture Foundation, this sprawling museum complex spans dozens of interactive zones preserving the monumental technological milestones and socio-cultural impact of Japan's world-leading rail transportation network. The crown jewel of the complex is the vast Rolling Stock Zone, exhibiting 36 genuine historic train cars and locomotives preserved in immaculate condition. Visitors can admire the British-built Class 150 No. 1 Steam Locomotive from 1871, which operated Japan's very first train journey between Shimbashi and Yokohama in 1872 (designated a National Important Cultural Property). The collection progresses through lavish gold-lacquered Imperial Carriages, Showa-era limited-express and sleeper trains, and seminal bullet trains, including the legendary bulb-nosed Series 0 Shinkansen, the mountain-climbing Series 200, and the aerodynamic Series E5 Hayabusa that speeds across Tohoku at 320 km/h. At the hall's center, a massive mechanical turntable rotates a steam engine daily accompanied by resonant whistle blasts. Beyond rolling stock, Teppaku immerses guests in cutting-edge simulation and technology. Visitors can take the controls of ultra-realistic motion driving simulators replicating the E5 Shinkansen and D51 steam engine, marvel at Japan's largest railway model diorama spanning 25 meters with hundreds of synchronized miniature trains cycling through day and night lighting, and pilot scaled electric carriages around an outdoor Mini Driving Train circuit. Complemented by rooftop observation decks overlooking speeding live Shinkansen lines and restaurants serving regional ekiben lunch boxes, Teppaku delivers an unforgettable educational journey for rail enthusiasts and families alike.
