Lying merely a breezy 10-to-15-minute high-speed ferry ride from Ishigaki Port in the Yaeyama archipelago, **Taketomi Island** (*Taketomi-jima*) is a tranquil coral-atoll sanctuary inhabited by roughly 300 residents where ancient Ryukyuan village life remains wonderfully intact. Designated as an official National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, Taketomi's village preserves the architectural soul of the Ryukyu Kingdom thanks to an unyielding local charter established in 1986: *"Do not sell the island, do not pollute the island, and cherish its traditional beauty."* The visual harmony of the village is mesmerising: sweeping unpaved pathways blanketed in crushed white coral sand are swept spotless by villagers every dawn, framed by low dry-stone boundary walls (*Gukku*) built from black volcanic coral and overflowing with electric magenta bougainvillea and crimson hibiscus. Nestled behind the walls are single-story timber homes capped with traditional interlocking red-clay roof tiles (*Akagawara*) sealed with white mortar. Perched vigilantly atop each terracotta roof is an individualized **Shisa**—a mythical lion-dog ceramic guardian sculpted with humorous, expressive scowls to ward off evil spirits and welcome auspicious coastal breezes. The iconic centerpiece of any Taketomi visit is a leisurely tour aboard a **Water Buffalo Cart** (*Suigyū-sha*). Powerful, gentle water buffalo slowly plod along the coral alleys pulling carts filled with delighted travellers, guided only by gentle commands from their driver. As the cart sways gently through the floral avenues, the driver strums a traditional snakeskin *sanshin* lute, serenading guests with evocative Yaeyama folk tunes such as *Asadoya Yunta*. Renting a bicycle allows travellers to pedal along flat coastal paths to **Kaiji Beach**, world-renowned for its natural "Star Sand" (*Hoshizuna*)—tiny star-shaped calcium carbonate exoskeletons of microscopic marine organisms—and watch transcendent amber sunsets from the historic stone jetty at Nishi-Sanbashi pier.
