Okayama Korakuen Garden (One of Japan’s Three Great Gardens & Black Crow Castle)

Category: Special Place of Scenic Beauty & Historic Feudal Strolling Garden | Location: Okayama

Ranked alongside Kenroku-en in Kanazawa and Kairaku-en in Mito as one of the **Three Great Gardens of Japan** (*Nihon Sanmeien*), Okayama Korakuen Garden is a peerless Edo-period strolling landscape awarded the maximum Three Stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. Commissioned in 1687 by Lord Tsunamasa Ikeda, the second daimyo of Okayama Domain, and completed after 14 years of meticulous construction directed by master retainer Nagatada Tsuda, this sprawling 13-hectare sanctuary is distinguished by expansive emerald lawn greens—an exceptionally rare and refreshing hallmark among classical Japanese dry-gravel gardens. At the serene core of the grounds lies Sawa-no-Ike Pond, punctuated by three poetic islets including Naka-no-shima with its floating Ayame tea hut and pine-crowned Jano-shima. Visitors can ascend the miniature six-meter knoll of Yuishin-zan Hill to take in a sweeping 360-degree panorama over sinuous watercourses fed by the Asahi River, tranquil water wheels, fragrant plum and cherry groves, and ancient clan tea plantations. From the southern lawn, the garden employs dramatic borrowed scenery (*Shakkei*), perfectly framing the multi-tiered black silhouette of adjacent **Okayama Castle**, affectionately named *U-jo* (Crow Castle) for its rare obsidian lacquered clapboards. The crown architectural structure is Enyo-tei, the daimyo’s private reception pavilion engineered so that sliding open its fusuma screen walls transforms the surrounding landscape into an unfolding panoramic scroll painting. Guests can unwind by the water's edge at Renchi-ken teahouse with bowls of freshly whisked matcha served alongside sweet *Kibi Dango* millet dumplings celebrated in the beloved local folklore of Momotaro. During seasonal evening illumination events known as *Genso Teien* (Garden of Dreams), thousands of candles and bamboo lanterns cast an ethereal golden luminescence across the reflecting ponds and night sky.
