Geikeibi Limestone Gorge & Traditional Pole-Boat River Cruise
Category: Limestone Gorge & Traditional River Cruise | Location: Nagazaka, Higashiyama-cho, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture
Sculpted over millions of years by the Satetsu River in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, Geikeibi Gorge is an awe-inspiring geological sanctuary officially celebrated among the 100 Landscapes of Japan (Nihon Hyakkei) and designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty. The gorge is walled by monumental vertical limestone ramparts soaring over 100 meters high along a pristine two-kilometer canyon. The evocative name 'Geikei' ('Lion's Nose') derives from a colossal limestone outcrop near the head of the canyon that uncannily resembles the snout of an upturned roaring lion. The quintessential highlight of visiting Geikeibi is the traditional flat-bottomed wooden punt cruise (Satobune)—propelled entirely without motors by a single skilled boatman using only a long wooden pole (sao). Gliding serenely across crystalline turquoise waters teeming with colorful wild carp and river ducks, passengers embark on an unforgettable 90-minute journey between towering white limestone palisades draped with cascading wild purple wisteria vines in May and fiery scarlet maple foliage in October. At the turning point beneath the staggering 124-meter-tall Daishōheki cliff, passengers step ashore to try their hand at the charming ritual of 'Undama' (Lucky Stone Throwing). Visitors select five small unbaked clay pebbles engraved with auspicious kanji characters (such as Fortune, Love, Longevity, or Health) and attempt to throw them across the river into a small hollow carved high into the limestone rock face. On the return journey, the boatman serenades travelers with the haunting regional folk ballad 'Geibi Oiwake,' his soulful vibrato echoing stirringly against the canyon walls in a timeless auditory wonder.
