Ushiku Daibutsu (Colossal 120-Meter Standing Bronze Buddha)
Category: Colossal Monument, World Record & Spiritual | Location: 2083 Kunocho, Ushiku, Ibaraki 300-1288 (JR Ushiku Station East Exit)
Completed in 1993 by the Jodo Shinshu Higashi Honganji Buddhist sect to commemorate the birth of founder Shinran, the Ushiku Daibutsu in Ibaraki stands as one of the tallest standing bronze statues on earth, officially certified by Guinness World Records. Soaring to a monumental height of 120 meters (a 100-meter bronze figure atop a 20-meter lotus pedestal) and weighing 4,000 tons, this colossus of Amitabha Buddha stands three times taller than New York’s Statue of Liberty, with an index finger alone measuring seven meters in length. Visitors step inside the colossal hollow bronze interior and ride a high-speed elevator through five spiritual floors. The third level reveals the "World of the Lotus Sanctuary" (Rengezo-sekai), an awe-inspiring golden sanctum lined with over 3,400 miniature gilded Buddha statues glowing beneath soft lighting. Ascending to the fourth and fifth levels at 85 meters within the Buddha’s chest, narrow viewing slits offer sweeping vistas extending to Mount Fuji and Tokyo Skytree on crystal-clear days. At the statue’s base sprawls the Pure Land Garden (Jodo Teien), envisioned as a terrestrial replica of the Buddhist paradise Sukhavati. Carpets of vibrant poppies in spring and pastel cosmos blossoms in autumn bloom beneath the tranquil gaze of the giant Buddha. Reachable via a short 15-minute bus ride from JR Ushiku Station on the Joban Line.
