Fukuroda Falls (Spectacular Four-Tier Cascades & One of Japan’s Three Great Waterfalls)
Category: Grand Waterfalls, Alpine Gorge & Ice Wonder | Location: 3-19 Fukuroda, Daigo-machi, Kuji-gun, Ibaraki 319-3523 (JR Fukuroda Station)
Revered alongside Nachi Falls and Kegon Falls as one of "Japan’s Three Great Waterfalls," Fukuroda Falls in northern Ibaraki cascades majestically over a sheer volcanic breccia cliff 120 meters tall and 73 meters wide. Flowing down four distinct giant rock terraces, it earned its historic name "Yodo no Taki" ("The Four-Tiered Falls"). Legendary Heian-period wandering poet Saigyo famously praised the site, writing that its true poetic beauty cannot be grasped unless one journeys here "four times across the four seasons": bursting with fresh mountain greenery in spring, roaring under cool mist in summer, framed by fiery Japanese maple crimson in autumn, and freezing completely into an astonishing frozen ice fortress ("Hyobaku") in midwinter, drawing ice climbers from around the globe. Visitors reach the falls via an illuminated pedestrian tunnel leading to two distinct observation levels: a lower cantilevered deck near a suspension bridge offering face-to-face misty encounters with the roaring base, and an upper viewing deck accessed via a 44-meter vertical cliff elevator revealing panoramic vistas across all four cascading rock tiers. Reachable in 10 minutes by bus from JR Fukuroda Station along the scenic Suigun Line.
