Otaru Snow Light Path Festival (Otaru Yukiakari no Michi — Floating Lanterns)
Schedule: 7 - 14 Februari 2026 | Location: Hokkaido (北海道)
Staged in mid-February to coincide with the Sapporo Snow Festival, the nostalgic maritime port of Otaru hosts one of Japan’s most intimate and soul-stirring winter events: the **Otaru Snow Light Path Festival** (*Otaru Yukiakari no Michi*). In contrast to high-energy winter festivals illuminated by electric floodlights, Otaru embraces the organic, soothing tranquility of natural candlelight. Thousands of handcrafted miniature snow sculptures and hollow ice lanterns are sculpted throughout the city by local volunteers and lit by soft flickering candles, casting an amber, heartfelt glow across the subarctic winter nightscape. The breathtaking centerpiece of the festival unfolds along the historic Otaru Canal. Floating across the mirrored, tranquil surface of the canal waters between snow-dusted Meiji-era stone warehouses are hundreds of floating candle lanterns cradled inside traditional glass fishing net floats (*ukidama*), blown by Otaru’s master glass artisans. The gentle bobbing of these luminous glass orbs on the water, combined with Victorian gas streetlamps and pathways lit by miniature igloos, produces one of the most enchantingly romantic ambiances in Asia during Valentine’s week. Travelers can also wander along the Former Temiya Railway Line site, Hokkaido’s very first railroad completed in 1880, which is transformed into an illuminated nocturnal snow corridor. Walking along snow-packed tracks framed by glowing snow lanterns, illuminated ice floral displays, and cozy handmade candle tunnels, visitors are welcomed by friendly townspeople offering hot tea and warm smiles around open braziers, embodying the warm, compassionate spirit of Hokkaido.
