Harvest Feast "Sapporo Autumn Fest", 13,000-Seat "Sapporo Odori Beer Garden", "Sapporo Lilac Festival" & "Sapporo White Illumination"
Schedule: 2026 | Location: Hokkaido (Sapporo)
Odori Park—the 1.5-kilometer-long green boulevard bisecting downtown Sapporo from Block 1 to Block 12—transforms throughout the year into Northern Japan's grandest four-season festival stage. Every September for three full weeks, the "Sapporo Autumn Fest" turns seven blocks of Odori Park into a colossal open-air gastronomic showcase drawing over two million visitors; more than 100 municipalities from every corner of Hokkaido set up direct stalls serving grilled Akkeshi oysters, Okhotsk scallops, Tokachi Wagyu beef, curated regional bowls at the Block 5 "Hokkaido Ramen Festival," and open-air Hokkaido wine and sake bars beneath golden autumn foliage. At the height of summer from late July to mid-August, the park becomes the "Sapporo Odori Beer Garden" (the centerpiece of the Sapporo Summer Festival)—Japan's largest open-air beer garden boasting 13,000 seats stretching across an entire kilometer. Japan's four major breweries (headlined by hometown icon Sapporo Breweries, founded here in 1876, alongside Kirin, Asahi, and Suntory) each command an entire city block pouring factory-fresh draft beer straight from massive tanks, complemented by a World Beer Square and German oompah bands. Odori's seasonal cycle begins in mid-May with the "Sapporo Lilac Festival," when 400 lilac trees (Sapporo's official city flower) burst into fragrant purple and white blossoms alongside Hokkaido wine tastings and outdoor tea ceremonies. Then from late November through Christmas and mid-winter, the "Sapporo White Illumination"—Japan's very first winter light festival, inaugurated in 1981—kindles over 730,000 crystal LED bulbs across Odori Park and Ekimae-dori avenue alongside the festive Munich Christmas Market serving hot mulled Glühwein and roasted almonds.
