Shikisai-no-Oka Panoramic Flower Gardens Biei
Category: Panoramic Flower Hill & Ranch Experience | Location: 3 Shinba, Biei-cho, Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido 071-0473
Spanning fifteen undulating hectares across the rolling hills of Shinba in Biei, Shikisai-no-Oka (literally "The Hill of Four-Season Colors") is one of Hokkaido’s grandest and most visually stunning open-air floral parks. Utilizing Biei’s natural topographical wave crests set against the dramatic amphitheater of the Tokachidake and Daisetsuzan mountain ranges, the gardens are planted with dozens of flower species that create an astonishing living patchwork quilt stretching as far as the eye can see. From late April through late October, the hillside transforms through continuous waves of seasonal color: spring welcomes brilliant tulips and violas, followed in summer by towering spires of multi-colored lupines, purple lavender, scarlet salvia, vibrant sunflowers, and velvety cockscomb (*celosia*), culminating in magnificent autumn dahlias and marigolds. To traverse the vast hill slopes comfortably, visitors can board the cheerful tractor-drawn *Shikisai Norokko-go* bus for a 15-minute panoramic tour, or rent private 4-seater electric golf carts to explore the floral lanes at their own leisure. The park also features an on-site Alpaca Ranch, where visitors of all ages can pet and hand-feed crisp green cabbage to a herd of fluffy, friendly alpacas originally imported from New Zealand. The visitor center features farm-to-table dining serving crispy Biei Kitaakari potato croquettes, sweet corn on the cob, farm-fresh Jersey milk soft-serve ice cream, and artisanal souvenirs. Located just a 5-minute taxi drive or 25-minute scenic stroll from JR Bibaushi Station, voluntary garden maintenance donations are around ¥500 during peak season.
