Rebun Island (Floating Island of Alpine Flowers)
Category: Remote Island & Endemic Alpine Floral Reserve | Location: Rebun-cho, Rebun-gun, Northern Hokkaido 097-1201
Anchored in the Sea of Japan fifty kilometers west of Wakkanai, Rebun Island (*Rebun-to*) is Japan’s northernmost inhabited island, spanning 29 slender kilometers from north to south. Exposed to frigid polar winds and chilled subarctic currents, the island possesses an extraordinary microclimate that allows over 300 varieties of arctic-alpine flora to flourish directly along coastal cliffs at sea level (0 meters altitude)—a botanical wonder that occurs only on alpine peaks above 2,000 meters in mainland Japan. This rare geographical anomaly has earned Rebun its global reputation as the "Floating Island of Flowers" (*Hana no Ukishima*). The holy grail of Rebun’s floral kingdom is the *Rebun Atsumoriso* (Rebun Lady’s Slipper Orchid), an endangered cream-white globular orchid that blooms exclusively on this island for just three brief weeks between late May and mid-June. At the protected Rebun Atsumoriso Sanctuary near Kusyu Bay, visitors wander along elevated timber boardwalks to admire these strictly protected wild orchids up close. Meanwhile, the hiking meadows around the dramatic dacite sea dome of Momoiwa (Peach Rock) burst into dense colonies of Rebun Edelweiss (*Rebun Usuyukiso*), northern bellflowers, and yellow alpine daylilies overlooking sheer ocean cliffs. Rebun is globally revered as a world-class walking and trekking destination, featuring iconic marked paths including the 4-Hour Cape Route and the Momoiwa Trail leading to Cape Sukoton at the island’s northernmost tip and Cape Sukai (*Sukai Misaki*), renowned for its transparent emerald-green cove framed by sheer volcanic sea cliffs. After a day of trekking, hikers feast on bowls of freshly harvested orange *Ezo-bafun Uni* (sea urchin) that feed exclusively on mineral-dense Rishiri kombu kelp. Heartland Ferry connects Kafuka Port on Rebun to Wakkanai in approximately two hours.
