Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses Hakodate & Bay Area
Category: Heritage Harbor Architecture & Waterfront District | Location: 14-12 Suehirocho, Hakodate, Hokkaido 040-0053
Facing the serene waters of Hakodate Bay along the historic harbor waterfront, the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses (*Kanemori Soko*) stand as a picturesque testament to Hokkaido’s 19th-century maritime trading boom. Originally founded in 1869 by pioneering merchant Kumashiro Watanabe as Hakodate’s premier commercial warehousing enterprise following the opening of treaty ports to Western commerce, the current brick structures were rebuilt in 1909 using fire-resistant red brick masonry following a devastating municipal fire, preserving the robust industrial elegance of the late Meiji era. Today, this evocative row of seven brick warehouses spanning several blocks has been repurposed into a premier waterfront dining, boutique shopping, and cultural district while scrupulously maintaining its original weathered brick facades, iron sliding doors, and timber ceiling beams. The complex is organized into four distinct zones: *Bay Hakodate*, centered around a scenic canal inlet lined with artisan glasscraft galleries and waterside cafes; *Kanemori Yobutsubankan*, stocking fine northern handicrafts and imported maritime goods; *Hakodate History Plaza*, home to the roaring Hakodate Beer Hall serving fresh draft brews straight from on-site copper vats; and *Kanemori Hall*, an intimate venue for live concerts and exhibitions. After sunset, warm golden illumination bathes the entire red-brick waterfront, reflecting across the harbor waters and cobblestone quays to create one of Hokkaido’s most romantic evening promenades. Food lovers can indulge in melt-in-the-mouth *Catchcakes* cheese souffles at the flagship Pastry Snaffle’s boutique, savor rich Hokkaido pumpkin tarts, or dine on the legendary Chinese Chicken Burger at the nautical-themed Lucky Pierrot Marina Suehiro shop right on the pier. Located just a pleasant 15-minute walk from JR Hakodate Station or 5 minutes from Jujigai Tram Stop, the waterfront grounds are free to explore daily.
