Farm Tomita Lavender Fields Furano

Category: Seasonal Flower Farm & Premier Agrotourism | Location: 15 Kisenkita, Nakafurano, Sorachi-gun, Hokkaido 071-0704

Farm Tomita in Nakafurano is internationally celebrated as the birthplace and crown jewel of lavender tourism in Japan. Established in 1958 by founder Tadao Tomita, the farm faced near-ruin in the early 1970s when cheap synthetic fragrances devastated Hokkaido’s commercial scent production. However, when a photograph of its hillside purple blossoms was featured on a national Japan National Railways calendar in 1976, travelers from across the nation fell in love with its pastoral beauty, transforming Farm Tomita into an iconic global destination. The farm’s rolling slopes overlook the dramatic Tokachidake volcanic mountain range, providing a majestic alpine backdrop. In the Traditional Lavender Field—the oldest lavender field in Japan—varieties like Okamurazaki and Yotei carpet the hillside in dense, fragrant waves of royal purple. The centerpiece of the farm is the iconic Irodori Field (Rainbow Field), where undulating ribbons of purple lavender, pristine white baby’s breath, scarlet poppies, pink campions, and sunny marigolds are planted in undulating parallel stripes, resembling a living rainbow draped across the earth. Visitors can explore Japan’s first lavender essential oil distillery workshop, tour the country’s largest dried flower pavilion (Dry Flower House), and relax at open-air terrace cafes serving signature lavender-infused soft-serve ice cream, fresh Furano melon slices, and lavender honey pastries. Admission to the farm is entirely free. During peak summer bloom (June to August), the scenic JR Furano-Biei Norokko train makes special seasonal stops at Lavender-Batake Station, just a 7-minute walk from the farm gates.
