Asahiyama Zoo Asahikawa
Category: Polar Wildlife Conservation & Interactive Zoo | Location: Kuranuma, Higashiasahikawacho, Asahikawa, Hokkaido 078-8205
Nestled on the lower slopes of Mount Asahi in Hokkaido’s second-largest city of Asahikawa, Asahiyama Zoo is celebrated internationally as a revolutionary pioneer of animal behavioral exhibits (*kodo-tenji*). First opened in 1967, the municipal zoo faced declining attendance in the mid-1990s. Rather than keeping animals in traditional confined cages, its visionary veterinary team redesigned the enclosures to simulate natural foraging and hunting environments, unleashing the animals’ innate vigor and propelling Asahiyama Zoo into one of Japan’s most visited attractions. The zoo’s viewing installations provide extraordinary close-up perspectives. At the Penguin House, visitors walk through an underwater 360-degree acrylic tunnel to watch king and gentoo penguins dive and bank at incredible speeds overhead, appearing to soar across a liquid blue sky. At the Seal House, a vertical transparent cylindrical tube called the *Marine Way* allows curious spotted seals to swim up and down between deep tanks right in front of smiling spectators. At the Polar Bear House, clear underwater viewing pools reveal giant white bears plunging into the water, while subterranean bubble domes let visitors pop their heads up at ground level like seals surfacing through arctic ice. During deep winter from late December through mid-March, the zoo presents its world-famous King Penguin Walk. Conceived to prevent winter obesity by encouraging daily exercise, the penguins waddle along a snowy spectator-lined track twice daily, delighting onlookers with their natural curiosity and comical strides. Adult admission is remarkably affordable at ¥1,000 (free for junior high school students and under). Regular local buses connect Asahikawa JR Station directly to the zoo gates in about 40 minutes.
