Sawara Grand Festival (UNESCO World Heritage Giant Effigy Floats & Historic Canals)
Schedule: Juli (Festival Musim Panas Yasaka Jinja) & Oktober 2026 (Festival Musim Gugur Suwa Jinja) | Location: Chiba (千葉県)
Inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016 and tracing three centuries of history to when the river port of Sawara flourished so abundantly it was praised as "Edo Masari" (Surpassing Edo itself), the "Sawara Grand Festival" is Chiba Prefecture’s premier heritage celebration. Staged twice annually—the Summer Festival of Yasaka Shrine in July and the Autumn Festival of Suwa Shrine in October—it transforms the historic canal district into an open-air Edo period theater. The iconic signature of the matsuri is its collection of colossal carved wooden floats (Dashi) carrying giant effigies of legendary historical and mythological figures towering 4 to 5 meters tall—including legendary Emperor Jinmu, sun goddess Amaterasu, and warrior Minamoto no Yorimasa. Handcrafted by master Edo and Meiji dollmakers, they represent the largest and most venerated festival effigies in Japan. These multi-ton wheeled fortresses are pulled along the flagstone lanes flanking the Ono River canal, framed by Edo-period merchant storehouses with black tiled roofs. The procession moves to the evocative melodies of "Sawara-bayashi"—ranked among "Japan’s Three Great Festival Musics" (Nihon Sandai Bayashi)—played on bamboo flutes and drums. The dramatic highlight is "Noritsuke" and "Sorobiki", where pullers skid and pivot the massive floats with surgical precision across narrow canal bridges without tumbling into the water. Free viewing along the historic canal town.
