Naritasan Gion Matsuri (Summer Grand Festival of 10 Ornate Floats & Steep Slope Ascent)

Schedule: Jumat, Sabtu & Minggu Pertama Bulan Juli 2026 (Puncak Minggu Sore) | Location: Chiba (千葉県)

Boasting more than three centuries of history since the mid-Edo period when monastic priests and town guilds joined forces to pray for bumper harvests, disease immunity, and answered prayers (Gokigan Jouju) before the fierce guardian deity Fudo Myo-o, the "Naritasan Gion Matsuri" is the premier summer celebration flanking Narita International Airport. Drawing roughly 500,000 spectators across the first weekend of July, it transforms the winding 800-meter historic Omotesando approach into a vibrant festival arena. The centerpiece of the festival features ten colossal, multi-tiered wooden floats (Dashi and Yatai) representing historic Naritasan quarters alongside the sacred Mikoshi palanquin carrying the spirit of Dainichi Nyorai. Adorned with gold-leaf dragon reliefs, tiers of glowing lanterns, and classical warrior figures atop, each float reverberates with the thunderous tempo of local Ohayashi drumming guilds directing hundreds of haulers pulling massive hemp ropes. The heart-stopping highlight of the matsuri takes place on the treacherous incline of "Nakamachi no Saka" slope. Along this narrow, steep hill flanked by century-old timber unagi restaurants, hundreds of haulers chant the unified battle cry "Yassa! Mossa!" and sprint at full speed, dragging the multi-ton behemoths up the steep grade purely by sheer human willpower! At night, the floats ignite thousands of paper lanterns for the grand "Sobiki" finale before the towering Somon Gate. Just 10 minutes by train from Narita Airport with completely free street access.
