Aizu Akabeko Red Bobblehead Cow (Fukushima), Traditional Kokeshi Dolls & Sendai Zunda Sweets
Among all traditional Japanese folk toys (*Kyodo Gangu*), the endearing **Akabeko** (Red Cow) of Aizu in Fukushima Prefecture holds an irreplaceable place in the hearts of Japanese people as a talisman of good health and resilience. Originating from a 9th-century legend where a steadfast red ox tirelessly dragged colossal timbers to build the Enzoji Temple in Yanaizu, this papier-mache (*hariko*) figure features an ingeniously balanced weighted pivot mechanism that causes its head to bob, nod, and swing cheerfully at the slightest touch or breeze. Painted in vibrant scarlet—a sacred color believed to repel epidemics and negative spirits—and adorned with protective black circular markings, the Akabeko is cherished across Japan as a guardian of children and family longevity. Tohoku’s second world-renowned artisan treasure is the **Traditional Kokeshi Doll** (*Dento Kokeshi*), born during the late Edo period among woodturners (*kijishi*) living in remote hot spring onsen hamlets across Miyagi (such as Naruko and Togatta) and Yamagata. Carved on foot-treadle lathes from local cherry, maple, and dogwood timbers, these minimalist limb-less cylindrical figurines are individually hand-painted with fine calligraphy brushes to express serene maiden faces and floral kimono patterns of wild chrysanthemums. Naruko-style kokeshi are famous for their unique neck joinery, which emits a soft, melodious squeaking sound when the head is gently turned. No journey to northern Honshu is complete without taking home Sendai’s sweet confections: **Zunda Mochi** and **Hagi no Tsuki**. Zunda is an all-natural, vibrant jade-green paste crafted by boiling, peeling, and hand-crushing fresh young green edamame soybeans with sugar and a pinch of salt, generously cloaking tender, freshly pounded glutinous rice cakes. Equally celebrated is *Hagi no Tsuki* by Kasho Sanzen—a cloud-soft, golden steamed sponge cake enveloping an intensely rich, velvety egg-and-milk custard cream, designed to evoke the luminous full autumn moon glowing above the blooming bush clover (*Hagi*) meadows of Sendai.
